- Contact the Environmental Protection Agency at www.epa.gov or local authorities for guidance on how to remove lead-based paint safely.
- Lead-based paint in good condition, however, does not present a problem and should not be removed unless appropriate measures are followed.
- Do not remove lead paint yourself. To permanently remove lead hazards, you must hire a lead "abatement" contractor.
- Keep areas where children play as dust-free and clean as possible.
- Babies have less hand-to-mouth activity than toddlers, who might place dust-covered toys or soil containing lead in their mouths.
- If your house has lead pipes, use only cold water from the tap for drinking and cooking. Boil cold water if hot water is needed for cooking.
- Flush standing water out of the pipes. Run cold water from the faucet until the water is noticeably colder, usually about 20 seconds.
