A brick barbecue can be a beautiful addition to your yard that you can build yourself. Here are a few tips to building your own backyard brick barbecue.

LOCATION:  Place your barbecue area close to the house, but away overhanging trees, fences and buildings. Make sure the area has protection from wind and minimum exposure to the elements.

BASE:  A masonry barbecue will require a deep bed of gravel and a steel-reinforced concrete pad 4 inches thick.

DESIGN: Use a photo or drawing for reference; often you can find free plans online or at the library. There are tow ways to construct your brick barbecue; one way is mortar, and the other way is with a simpler design without mortar. The barbecue should have a cooking height of about 30 to 36 inches and needs to be at least 24 inches deep. The firebox needs to be 4 or 5 inches below. In addition to bricks, you will need barbecue grates and ashtrays.

UTILITY:
Before finalizing your design, check zoning requirements. You probably will need permits for any electrical or plumbing work if you choose to add electricity or water to your design.
