Re-staining walls is a do-it-yourself project that is fairly easy to accomplish. It doesn't take a lot of materials, is fairly inexpensive and offers big rewards for the time spent.


  1. The finishing process will create a little dust. You will want to remove the contents from the room and seal off entryways.



  2. If there is any grease or dirt on the paneling, clean it with a wood cleaner or a mixture of 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 quart water.

  3. Sand the paneling lightly to remove any glossy spots.

  4. Remove sanding residue with a vacuum and tack cloth.

  5. Apply the new topcoat with a brush, paint pad or sponge brush. If you need a second coat, check recoat time on label instructions before applying.
