What’s the role?

The Principal Systems Engineer (PSE) is a multidisciplinary role in an exciting new industry that seeks to bring zero emissions mobility to all sectors of global transportation. The PSE will provide technical leadership in support of all aspects of the Shell Hydrogen Business, including business development, product management, project delivery, operations, and safety. The PSE will support the Systems Engineering Team Lead to develop a strong systems-thinking based team rooted in systems engineering fundamentals. To accomplish this, the PSE will serve as the primary technical resource through the full lifecycle of high-profile opportunities and projects, serving as the technical counterpart to the Business Opportunity Manger during opportunity development and to the Project Delivery Manager during the project delivery phase.

In addition, the PSE will be tasked to develop a quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) function and full product lifecycle management (PLM) capability in the team. Finally, the PSE will provide test and verification support to the Product Development Team to assist delivering new product offerings in light duty, heavy duty, marine, and off-road vehicle applications. These new products will directly support developing business opportunities, making Shell New Energies the partner of choice in helping regions and countries meet their emissions targets.

Accountabilities

Lead the development of a quality management system consistent with ISO 9001 practices in the Shell Hydrogen Product Development team to enhance our ability to deliver industry recognized certified products for our product portfolio.

Evaluate and develop tier 1 suppliers globally and support the development of a tier 2 supply chain. The emphasis is on the assessment and improvement of QA/QC processes at our tier 1 suppliers. The PSE will assist the suppliers with their ability to supply high quality products to the Shell Hydrogen business.

Lead the advancement of QA/QC processes for the products and projects developed by the Product Development team. These include development of internal product realization processes, procedures, and documentation requirements that adhere to industry leading quality standards.

Support Hydrogen business development with opportunity framing, systems description, cost modeling, supply chain development and HSSE engagement.

Engage operations and reliability growth management to define goals and identify appropriate development partners to produce new components/systems which meet business and technical goals.

Support global Hydrogen IP strategy by publishing, presenting at conferences, and filing patents.

Work with the Product Development Team Lead to define and launch new product initiatives where capability/performance/cost/reliability gaps have been identified during opportunity and project development.

Lead suppliers by influencing the utilization of 3rd party test facilities and building new work space capabilities to meet requirements.

Mentor engineering staff, program staff, and suppliers on system integration and regulatory compliance.

Requirements:

What we need from you

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

M. Sc. in Engineering or Business/Marketing required.

15 years diverse work experience with quality management, product lifecycle management, testing, integration, reliability and deployment aspects in regulated or emerging industries.

Minimum 5 years working on design and/or implementation of complex technical systems or systems of systems.

Deep and broad technical knowledge in several of the following areas:

Process control

Industrial electronics

PLM systems and tools

QA/QC assessment (APQP, PPAP, or equivalent)

Quality management systems (ISO 9001 or equivalent (ISO/TS 16949, AS 9100))

Modeling and Simulation

Systems Engineering

Functional Safety Systems (IEC 61508, etc.)

Demonstrated ability to implement design for safety processes.

Creating engineering development tests, and product qualification test for high value-low volume products.

Creating and implementing hardware integration plans.

Experience working with facilities in creating new prototyping and experimentation space.

Risk management analyses and trade studies.

Clear oral and written communication skills
