Position Purpose
What’s the role –
The Heat Transfer Engineer provides technical support and leadership for reliable and efficient operations of heat transfer equipment at the Norco Manufacturing Complex. This includes both fired and unfired equipment such as furnaces, boilers, flares, thermal oxidizers, air preheaters, SCRs, flares, air-cooled heat exchangers, plate-and-frame heat exchangers, and shell-and-tube heat exchangers. This role supports both the refinery and chemical plant assets. The successful candidate will work with Operations, Engineering, Process, and Pressure Equipment Integrity to ensure we continually meet the requirements for heat transfer equipment at the site.
Provide technical assurance on the design, selection, construction, commissioning, and start-up of heat transfer equipment.
Provide technical assurance for plant projects and MOCs that affect fired and unfired heat transfer equipment, including field construction support, assurance of conformance with design specifications, and non-conformance resolution.
Provide technical assurance on the design, selection, construction, and maintenance of refractory materials and refractory-lined equipment in consultation with refractory specialists.
Knowledge of API and ASME codes and assist to ensure project or equipment meets industry codes, refinery engineering practices and specifications.
Provide advice on maintenance and operational issues, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
Support and guide operations in measures to improve efficiency and emission reduction.
Provide operational support during start-up, troubleshooting, and incident and near-miss investigation.
Assist in the planning and execution of heat transfer equipment maintenance.
Assist with the inspection of heat transfer equipment during turnarounds.
Develop equipment data sheets for new and repaired equipment.
Develop refractory dry out guidelines for refractory installations.
Manage the spare flare tip inventory and coordinate repairs and replacements.
Provide support of annual boiler MACT compliance assessments.
Provide training and mentoring to Operations and other disciplines at the site around heat transfer.
Recommend heat transfer equipment replacement or improvements and initiate project funding requests to improve reliability.
Conduct rating and vibration analysis of heat exchangers.
Review infrared thermography scans of refractory-lined equipment and furnaces in coking or fouling service.
Interact with contract thermography specialists to support site thermography needs.
Ensure thermography equipment is properly stored, maintained, and calibrated.
Knowledge in fired and unfired design programs such as FRNC5, HTRI.
Act as a resource for integrity issues related to heat transfer equipment.
Coordinate site wide issues related to fired and unfired equipment including equipment integrity, reliability, compliance, operational excellence, and emissions to air.
Provide technical assurance on the design, selection, construction, commissioning, and start-up of heat transfer equipment.
Provide operational support during start-up and troubleshooting of equipment and provide heat transfer training and mentoring to Operations and other disciplines.
Provide technical support for Boiler MACT and other related regulatory programs for fired equipment.
Develop and support new heat transfer equipment technologies.
Skills & Requirements
What we need from you –
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering
3 or more years of experience in the field of heat transfer equipment, and awareness of furnace process controls. Manufacturing plant experience preferred.
Background in refinery or petrochemical plant processes, along with working knowledge of API 531, 530, 535, 537, 538,556, 560, 573, 936 and ASME B31.1, B31.3, VB16.5, Sec I, Sec II, Sec VIII Div 1, TEMA, NFPA, OSHA.
