Job Description:

The Control System Engineer (CSE) is deployed by the CSE Department to support the control systems within an operating area. Each area has controls that automate plant processes and provide an interface to operators for control, indication and alarming. CSE technical challenges include support of equipment spread over a large geographical area, a mixture of equipment ranging from the oldest to the very newest technologies, real-time closed loop control, supervisory control, advanced control, real-time optimization and safety instrumented functions.

Success in this role is maintaining excellent process safety performance, reducing control and instrument reliability incidents, enforcing engineering standards, improving standardization of equipment and configuration while planning for and reducing obsolescence, and responding to, anticipating and meeting Operation’s needs. The engineer must thrive in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment and use prioritization skills to balance urgent short-term work with crucial long-term objectives.

Dimension:

The unit CSE supports one of the six operating departments at the Martinez refinery and is responsible to assure the reliability and integrity of the control and safety systems. To this end, the CSE will coordinate with Operations, Engineering Maintenance and Technical groups to identify, prioritize and resolve system level issues and initiate or implement projects to maintain or improve margin performance, comply with internal and external requirements and provide technical assurance for existing and new control systems and components.

The CSE reports to the Control Systems Engineering Supervisor, then through the Technology and Process Engineering Manager to the site Technology Manager. As a deployed unit engineer, the CSE also takes direction from the unit Production Unit Manager and works closely with peers including other unit CSEs, the process engineer, the instrument inspector, and engineers from other technical disciplines.

The position provides opportunities to sharpen instrument and analyzer technology and troubleshooting skills with practical field experience. The position has growth potential for supervision of contractors and mentoring of paraprofessionals, business case development and presentation, and capital project work process.

Requirements:

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

B.S. Engineering degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Chemical, General Engineering or other relevant engineering branch.

With at least five(5) years experience in process automation, controls and instrumentation experience in a manufacturing facility.

Beneficial technical skills include:

Experience with Honeywell DCS (TDC3000, Experion), Honeywell Safety Manager configuration and Honeywell HMIWeb graphics development

General instrumentation and process analyzer (QMI) experience

Engineering documentation (P&IDs, loop wiring diagrams), control theory and applications

Control theory and applications and troubleshooting methodology

Knowledge of safety reviews (PHA, HEMP-LOPA, etc.) with participation.

Foundation Fieldbus networks

TCP/IP networking, Modbus TCP/IP communication, and information security

Desired soft skills include:

Strong self-motivation and organization skills

Demonstrated analytical and decision- making skills

Has the energy and enthusiasm with advocacy for important objectives
