Instrumentation and Controls Engineer

Instrumentation and Controls Engineerrequired to work initially in a multidisciplinary team based in Houston, Tx as part of the new product development team. Under the supervision of a project manager, this position is for a mid-level instrument / controls engineer capable of determining detailed understanding of project instrumentation and controls design requirements, schedule, and deliverables. This position requires that the engineer can work independently or with other engineers / designers / researchers.

Responsibilities

Lead the design and selection of different instrument types for flue gas applications, inputs into the definition of control logic, design of control logics system, selection and sizing of sensors, instruments for data acquisition and control system for conventional or novel carbon capture modules

Prepare engineering documents such as control and automation philosophy, Instrument datasheets, instrument index, I/O list, logic diagrams, etc.

Provide inputs into the preparation of other engineering documents such as cause and effects, control narratives, instrument list, alarm & trip lists etc. to support the engineering and deployment.

Review / comment on PFDs and P&IDs and Perform Instrument and Electrical Equipment sizing calculations.

Work with other engineering disciplines, such as chemical, mechanical, electrical and Information Technology (IT), to solve cross-domain problems related to instrument selection and design, control logic, automation equipment and processes involving the use of sensors, actuators, PLC/DCS, and IT infrastructure.

Analyze discipline problems and identify, adapt, and develop technologies from the fields of automated and autonomous systems and process industrial automation to address them.

Liaise between Research and Operations organizations to promote appropriate decision-making technologies and solutions.

Support the engineering design team in understanding and implementing technologies.

Document and validate automated processes with domain experts and integrate systems and software, considering qualities such as security, safety, performance, and reliability.

Support the senior technical team in the creation of a technical roadmap for advanced technologies stack.

Provide support and training to the operation teams in either pilot tests or commercial deployments, conduct troubleshooting and make continuously improvement to the system

Support the needs from the R&D, engineering design, commercialization, and operation teams on the carbon capture control systems at pilot or plant level

Connect the real time data from control systems or historians to cloud based data platform

Research and implement advanced Process Controllers (APC) to improve separation process profitability, stability, and safety

Required Qualifications

B.S. degrees in instrumentation or control engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering relevant disciplines. Graduate degrees are preferred.

5 - 15 years of experiences in process instrument and control systems

Good knowledge of instrument types, uses, their selection and design

Good knowledge of relevant Industry Standards

Good knowledge of IIOT systems and data platforms

Ability to identify and solve problems, and effectively communicate and advocate for solutions to others (from operators to management)

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Process simulation and/or trending software experience

Experience and good knowledge of power plant design or operation will be beneficial.

Experience and good knowledge with gas separation or carbon capture process will be beneficial.
