Responsibilities
The Fluorescence Microscopy (FM) engineering group in Madison, WI is looking for an Optical Engineer to participate in design, development, and testing of the next generation of Optical tools. FM develops world class products for Neuroscience (Multi-photon), cell biology (Confocal) and super resolution microscopy (SML). The Optical Engineer will work closely with other engineers on a variety of projects in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment. The Optical Engineer will participate in activities involving development of benchtop optical setups, design and procurement of optical/optomechanical components and systems, optical testing and qualification, etc. The position requires strong fundamentals and breadth of experience in optical systems design including sources, detection and control.
Tasks include participation in optical design strategies, mounting and aligning optics, testing imaging performance, taking optical measurements (power, spectrum etc.), and reporting.
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Participate in the development of optical solutions & systems pertaining to our products. (30%)
Participate in the design of optical/optomechanical components and systems. (20%)
Perform prototype assembly and verification of optical/mechanical systems. (35%)
Enter and maintain database information related to optical and mechanical designs. (10%)
Specify and/or coordinate optical component design & fabrication with suppliers. (5%)
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Fundamental knowledge and solid understanding of optical principles.
Previous experience with design and development of benchtop optical setup.
Comprehensive skills in alignment of optical systems.
Some experience with optical design tools (e.g. Zemax, Code V or others)
Strong general computer skills.
ADDED CONSIDERATION:
Experience in concurrent mechanical & optical design.
Optical imaging knowledge & background.
Experience in optical systems development.
Experience in microscopy imaging and low-signal detection techniques.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Typically requires a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience with a Bachelor\u2019s degree; or a Master\u2019s degree in the field of Physics, Electronics Engineering, Optics or equivalent.
