JOB SUMMARY
CARILION CLINIC - TECHNOLOGY SERVICES GROUP (TSG) is seeking a System Engineer II-UNIX/LINUX to join our TSG team in Roanoke, VA. You will research, implement, and maintain information technologies to increase server systems operational efficiencies and secure Carilion's enterprise network. Manage corporate projects and problem resolution requiring the participation of multiple specialized teams.
Significant Responsibilities may include but not limited:
*Installs, setup and configuration of Linux systems and servers, often for organization-wide deployment. Answers questions related to setup and installation, and setup the architecture of the system, including back-end databases and scripts for specific applications and use cases. *Performs routine system maintenance and resolve server-side issues as they arise. Reviews error logs and reported errors and seek out solutions. Frequently, will need to work directly with the system's source code to make necessary changes to ensure reliable performance and then deploy those changes throughout the system in accordance with Change Control processes. *Conducts system backups according to company or industry standards. Perform these backups weekly, daily, or more frequently depending on system space and business needs to improve system recovery after a crash or other outage and supports data integrity by ensuring that there is never a massive loss of vital information. *In addition to maintaining Linux systems and servers, also monitor system performance to prevent slowdowns and crashes. Examines daily traffic logs and reports or receive direct reports from end users and resolves potential issues or recurring problems within the system. *Provides technical support and guidance to users and other Engineers. In many cases, the Linux engineer works closely with other developers to answer technical questions or resolve issues with server-side performance. They may also support users by assisting with installation and maintenance of Linux-based programs and help debug these applications so that they work with existing servers. *Maintains system security by actively identifying faults and vulnerable areas within the system's architecture. This part of the job requires extensive knowledge of viruses and other sources of system vulnerability, and requires the Linux engineer to proactively develop protections, particularly when deploying system-wide changes that can open new vulnerabilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: Associates Degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
EXPERIENCE: Minimum five years' experience in computer electronics and/or system administration of Windows, *nix platforms to include hardware maintenance.Experience in microcomputers and supporting telecommunications hardware/software required.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Valid Virginia drivers' license and dependable transportation
PREFERRED:
A minimum of two of the following certifications are required:
CompTIA Server+
Microsoft MCSE
IBM Certified System Administrator AIX
CompTIA Linux+
Citrix CCEE for XenApp Server 6 (or greater)
VMWare Certified Professional
Additionally, any of the following are preferred, but not required:
Citrix CCAA
Citrix CCIA
CompTIA Network+
CompTIA Security+
RedHat Certified Engineer
IBM Certified Systems Expert - Enterprise Technical Support
IBM Certified Systems Expert - Virtualization Technical Support for AIX
IBM Certified Systems Expert - High Availability for AIX
OTHER: Good organizational skills, analytical, dependable, detail oriented, interpersonal skills, and understanding of the English language (both written and oral). Must have thorough understanding of the 7-layer OSI model. VMWare, Citrix, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange/O365, IBM AIX and/or Linux experience preferred. Must have excellent problem-solving skills and be customer service oriented.
