Job Description:

What is the Role?

This role is an opportunity to join the growing Americas Maritime Technology team as a development Naval Architect, working with industry experts to deliver competitive projects across the value chain. The role provides opportunity to materially contribute to the group’s net zero ambition through technology deployment and development of new business such as CCS and hydrogen. The successful candidate will provide Naval Architecture expertise to Shell Group Companies, Joint Ventures and Third Parties on maritime elements of onshore / offshore LNG / Oil-related projects. The scope includes, but is not limited to:

New FPSO projects

Supporting the development of specifications

Supporting tender clarifications and evaluations

Evaluation of oil evacuation systems

Providing input into recommendations for Award

Existing FPSO projects

Supporting maritime elements of inspection, maintenance, modification and repair projects

Supporting Life Extension projects

Oil Evacuation technology and studies:

Supporting studies for optimisation of oil evacuation from FPSOs

Evaluation and supporting development of new oil evacuation technologies and ships

Design input into offshore terminals, including SPM, FPSO, Floating LNG, Regasification

LNG as Fuel:

Supporting business development with technical expertise on LNG fuel systems

Supporting LNG Bunker vessel projects

Supporting license to operate activities (in areas such as LNG fuel transfer systems)

Engagement with regulatory authorities

LNG terminals and Regassification Projects

Supporting front end project development for both LNG terminals and regassification projects

Offshore Wind

Support for growing offshore wind segments through design, construction, and commissioning of support vessels

Sector decarbonization initiatives

Collaborate with Maritime Technology Innovation team to support the development and implementation of “Future Fuel” systems and other opportunities to reduce GHG footprint

Other miscellaneous support to maritime project as delegated by line management

Contribution to the development of Shell Group standards and improvements in the management of Maritime risk.

Accountabilities:

To comply with the Shell Business Principles, the Shell Group HSSE and SP Control Framework, Transport Manual – Maritime Safety in all aspects of daily work. Consider Enterprise First and Shell’s overall strategy in project development

To provide maritime technical and project engineering support to Shell Group.

To assist with preparation of project documentation in accordance with Project Management Framework (PMF) including outline technical specifications and evaluation of bids, design development processes, plan approval.

To support the project manager by helping to create and agree an assurance framework with internal Subject Matter Experts and ensure that all assurance materials are submitted / actions are addressed in a timely manner

To support project(s) to achieve delivery through stakeholder engagement, use experience to anticipate issues and track quality / schedule KPIs

To provide the project manager with updates on project performance including budget, schedule and quality.

To take charge of elements of a project as directed by the Project Manager.

To ensure that statutory and regulatory compliance issues are highlighted in a timely manner to clients and addressed, engaging with statutory, regulatory authorities and maritime NGOs as required.

To manage or execute additional maritime-related projects as delegated by line manager

To be competent and confident in own discipline and support the project manager as a discipline specialist

To positively contribute to shareholder value, by providing practical and innovative solutions to ensure the success of projects

To positively influence projects so that they are conducted safely and efficiently

To proactively ensure that Process Safety is considered as a priority in all activities by participation in HAZID, HAZOP, risk assessments etc.

To carry out or support maritime and HSSE audits on facilities and vessels, contractor assessments, vessel inspections, reviews, risk assessments and incident investigations.

To apply Shell Group Standards (e.g. S&MT DECs, Maritime Process Model, DEM1, DEM2 manuals) and Shell’s ORS and PMF processes.

Dimensions:

The position is within the Maritime Technology Team, Americas

The role is based in Houston and is a Member of the Shell Shipping and Maritime “Maritime Design & Engineering” (MDE) Global Technical Discipline.

Influence: The position is required to work within multidisciplinary and virtual teams from various departments and at all levels across Shell Group and with third parties.

Required to maintain a contemporary knowledge base within own area of expertise.

Required to consider personal competencies and proactively address development needs to close any competency gaps and to enhance professional skills

Skills & Requirements

What we need from you –

Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.

Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Naval Architecture or Offshore (Ocean) Engineering.

Strong interpersonal skills, self-starting, driven and motivated individual.

Excellent analytical, communication & presentational skills with ability to work as an individual, lead work or as a team member where required.

Consistently demonstrates strong HSSE values / leadership and knowledge. Develops a strong HSSE culture in own sphere of influence.

Natural collaborator and clear communicator who is comfortable collaborating with diverse stakeholders.

Has high energy and able to deliver results at high cadence.

Is flexible and agile where required without compromising safety standards or excessively eroding project value to achieve this

Able to influence peers, changing style as required to work more effectively with others

Looks to address and resolve conflicts in a timely manner

Able to independently produce written reports of a high quality in the English language and tailor for a variety of audiences

Understands project / maritime assurance processes

Very well organized and able to develop clear plans. Can methodically track and drive all activities to meet objectives.

Ensures that roles, responsibilities and deliverables for all work resources are clear and objectives are SMART

Travel and working at remote sites is expected up to 25% of time (onshore, offshore, US and overseas)

Must be fluent in English language (spoken and written)

Must be fit and capable of occasional strenuous exercise (climbing stairs, ladders and staging onboard vessels, enclosed space entries etc in shipyards

Must be cable of obtaining BOSIET and HUET Certification for occasional visits to ships, shipyards and offshore
