We are seeking an enthusiastic and talented engineer, physicist or similar to work on an innovative collaboration between Artemis Optical and the University of Plymouth and in particular Wolfson Nanomaterials and Devices Laboratory. The Role: This is a very interesting and challenging role for a qualified engineer, physicist or similar to work on a joint project under Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, between Artemis Optical and the University of Plymouth. The key objective of this role is to establish a systematic approach to analyse and optimise key PVD manufacturing processes and equipment to increase yield, enhance quality, increase performance and reduce waste. This will allow quicker response time, increased flexibility and access to new markets and applications. The Candidate: You will have: Essential criteria that must be met. A good first degree with a minimum 2:1 (Hons) in Physics, Physical Chemistry Electrical/Electronic Engineering or similar. Please specify grade. A master’s degree, and/or a PhD in a complementary area relating to Nanotechnology/Thin film coatings/Optics design or equivalent experience. Evidence of experimental characterisation of optical thin films/electrical measurements. Desirable criteria that would be advantageous. Experience in designing, modifying and optimising a production process and running experiments. Practical experience of vapour deposition to develop thin films. Familiarity with analytical techniques such as Statistical Process Control, finite element analysis (FEA) software and Design of Experiments. Experience working in industry is desirable and specifically within the engineering/scientific sector Development of training materials to embed knowledge and the ability to contribute to, and work within QA system, such AS9100. Need to span all areas in the business and liaise with suppliers and customers so excellent communication skills are important. An interest and enthusiasm in thin film coating techniques, engineering and technologies Microscopy (FTIR, Raman, standard optical microscopy) You will be highly numerate with well-developed theoretical and statistical skills You will need to be methodical and tenacious with a proven ability to lead a project from the engineering/scientific perspective and work well within a team. A pre-requisite of this post is that you must successfully pass a security vetting process. You will be working with Dr Shakil Awan, who has extensive experience in precision measurements in solid state physics/superconductivity, AC & DC quantum Hall effect, MEMS, Impedance Standards, high-speed electronics, sensors and fabrication and characterisation of thin films using optical and electrical techniques. Dr Awan is supported by Dr David Jenkins Associate Professor of Nanomaterials and Devices. The focus of his research has been in the area of sensor development for the characterisation and optimisation of materials and devices. Previous work has focused on sensing, mainly applied to the characterisation of functional thin films for MEMS applications.
