Position Purpose
What’s the role –
The Process Safety Engineer for Safeguarding will provide support to the safe operation of the Deer Park Chemicals Site through the Safeguarding Program by ensuring process unit safeguarding gaps are identified and mitigated, by managing contractor activities around safeguarding revalidation studies and leading or assuring projects have effectively mitigated identified safeguarding gaps. The role will also provide process safety support in technical reviews for process changes to the operating units and in general safeguarding needs.
The person will also provide Technical Safety Support in the areas of Shell’s Hazards Effects Management Process and Management of Change technical reviews. They may also be asked to provide support with facility siting, consequence modelling, assurance reviews, audits, and other areas as needed.
A major portion of the job will be to manage the Safeguarding Revalidation Program:
Become familiar with process unit operations and interactions between different units within the site to lead, drive and quality control the definition of the basis for safeguarding revalidation projects.
Act as a liaison between different departments within the organization and external contractors to ensure collection and communication of the right data for the safeguarding projects.
Drive contractor activities to achieve safeguarding revalidation milestones per plan and within agreed cost.
Become familiar with industry best practices and Shell standards/DEPs in safeguarding and process unit operations to effectively review and quality check system overpressure scenarios, relief device sizing and mitigation recommendation performed by the contractor
Prepare a final mitigation plan from the result of the revalidation study, present to operations management and acquire their agreement.

Become proficient in using the required software to oversee proper calculation and documentation of safeguarding studies.
Lead the completion of smaller safeguarding projects and or review the closure of larger safeguarding related projects.
Maintain KPIs on safeguarding gaps and action closures.
Other work activities of this position will include:
Provide process safety expertise in Technical Reviews for process changes and projects.
dentify overpressure scenarios and perform safeguarding and relief calculations for operations and projects as needed.
Conduct process safety field observations.
Participate in risk assessments.
Coordinate relevant projects and studies between Process Safety and Shell Technical Organization.
Ensure appropriate input and consultation is acquired from customers / stakeholders, technical and business organizations.
By execution of these accountabilities, it is expected that the successful candidate will contribute to bringing world-class process safety performance to Deer Park.
Skills & Requirements
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis.
7 plus years’ experience in Process Engineering, Safeguarding, Process Safety or other relevant industry
Engineering Degree – Chemical, Mechanical, or another relevant field
5 or more years of safeguarding experience including sizing and case identification
Working knowledge of API 521
Working knowledge of PSPPM and Salus Relief Software
Ability to work well with a wide range of stakeholders – contractors, operations, leadership, etc.
