Best Buy is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager, Data Engineering where you will play a key role in shaping the Best Buy's Data Development practices within a Subject Area Group. This is an opportunity to apply your leadership and engineering expertise to a key Best Buy subject area. The leader in this role will develop people, form strong working partnerships with a specific business subject area as well as other Digital and Technology leaders, plan and deliver on cloud migration and subject area development goals, contribute to evolving use of data and decision intelligence led solutions for solving problems, and scale the impact of data through development of scalable, cloud native services.
This role requires mature technical, business and communication skills to be able to collaborate with business and technology leaders to co-create and understand key enterprise outcomes in addition to being able to build and operate continuous deployment pipelines. This role requires cloud data engineering skills. This role also conducts regular 1:1s with all team members and manages performance for the entire subject area team. Ensures sufficient documentation exists for the products their team is responsible for, and the documentation is maintained.
Key responsibilities
Recruits and builds one or more teams
Leads those teams responsible for a subject area group, as well as smaller subject areas
Ensures the quality and integrity of the development practices for their teams and identifies opportunities for improvement in how the team works through usage and adoption of recommended tools and standards
Is responsible for defining their teams’ objectives and the key results they will deliver in a partnership with their team
Participate in production support, dev ops activities along with their team
Active participant in planning and performs code and architecture reviews of the product their teams are responsible for
Solves highly complex issues, often by applying new approaches. Fully understands consequences and risks of changes. Design and build solutions with impact to across teams
Drives trade-offs in decision making on solutions
Leads efforts that intentionally and directly influences or affects other teams
Mentor newer engineers on the soft skills that they will need to lead and influence their own teams. Ensures team members are active in their growth and development plans.
Maintains, cultivates and grows business relationships in one or more subject areas
Works collaboratively with other engineering and architecture teams to ensure scalability of solutions and that approaches that seek to leverage best practices and approved architectural patterns
Minimum Qualifications:
5 or more years of relevant data engineering experience with a bachelor’s degree OR equivalent relevant professional experience
1 or more years’ experience leading engineers to include mentoring, coaching, work direction, task assignment, etc.
Preferred Qualifications
7 or more years relevant data engineering professional experience
Relevant engineering experience such as software development; team or technology leadership or work direction; critical reasoning skills; ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders; experience managing relationships with stakeholders; experience delivering quality engineering outcomes.
Building and optimizing data pipelines using one or more integration patterns and solutions (e.g., ETL/ELT, Replication/CDC, Message driven, Event driven, Event sourcing, Streaming API design, CQRS and more)
Pivoting teams from project delivery to agile practices and transforming to a product led operating model
Assessing skills needed on the team, and work to build toward these by hiring and training an inclusive, diverse team
Understands and can demonstrate the value of, and the ability to, enable collaboration between engineers, product managers, decision scientists, and leaders
Excellent communication skills, especially when working with a distributed team
Mentoring and delegating work to encourage growth of those around you. Experience reviewing patterns, code and providing thoughtful, constructive feedback
