Where you fit in –
This role will be part of the Engineering team of a Portfolio of projects which spans across multiple lines of businesses and encompasses projects sites in Louisiana and Texas, USA. In aggregate, the portfolio’s Total Installed Cost is expected to be a multi-billion dollars investment.
Due to the size and complexity, the Portfolio of projects will be developed and executed from multiple locations, spanning from New Orleans to Houston. It is envisioned that the base office for the project will ultimately be in Louisiana. Engineering will likely involve multiple locations and will be finalized in the portfolio execution strategy yet to be developed.
What's the role -
The Sr. Heat Transfer Engr - Unfired is accountable to provide technical assurance and oversight for the entire portfolio for the design and selection of unfired heat transfer equipment (thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical), with keen understanding the process parameters impacting equipment performance and life; and in accordance with applicable ASME and API codes and Shell Discipline Engineering Practices (DEPs). This includes technical assurance of projects in multiple phases of the Opportunity Realization Process. The candidate must be able to provide steer and guidance to the portfolio of projects in the Heat Transfer discipline team, comprising of technical staff from Owner’s team and Engineering Contractor to shape the Heat Transfer technical requirements that will deliver competitive scoping, and efficient execution.
This role will not have any direct reports, but indirectly will have several members of the Engineering Procurement Contractors (EPCs) contractors working for this role.
This role would include definition of the appropriate strategy for the projects specifications considering DEPs, Global Functional Specifications, Shell Pre-Engineered Products, Project Specific Technical Specs, etc.; maximizing replication of tried and tested design and engineering solutions with a strong emphasis on design for safe construction and embedment Project Delivery Model improvement ideas (viz. Industry solutions, Systems engineering, etc.).
The candidate is expected to perform or support scouting studies, conceptual design, Basic Design and Engineering Packages of Heat Transfer Equipment for the portfolio. Will play a pivotal role on finding the appropriate cost and benefits for the purpose of assurance of Heat Transfer– Unfired engineering solutions, to drive credible and competitive scope toward making the opportunity affordable.
Assure compliance with Heat Transfer Equipment regulatory requirements and applicable industry and company codes, standards, and recommended practices. Capable to build a shared vision and deliver through self and others the required scope definition.
Key accountabilities:
Health, Security, Safety and Social leadership, role model commitment to Life Saving Rules, Goal Zero and Golden Rules.
Delivery of Portfolio Heat Transfer – Unfired Engineering and Quality and Technical assurance reviews.
pressure vessels, tanks, piping and relief valves in accordance with applicable ASME and API codes and engineering specifications.
Provide technical support for the design and selection of heat transfer technologies and actively pursue innovative approaches in the field of unfired heat transfer.
Participate in the review of sites’ existing Heat Transfer Equipment and integrity, asses the gaps and provide recommendation for improvement, replacement, or metallurgy upgrade.
Ensure that critical aspects of Heat Transfer Equipment, integrity and maintainability are included in portfolio estimates and execution.
Delivery and assurance, or oversight thereof, for the portfolio Heat Transfer engineering deliverables across various Engineering and Procurement (EP) partners per the controls identified in the projects Control Assurance Plan and the selected projects standards / specifications. This includes assurance that the engineering deliverables are done correctly and technical sign-off of changes. Responsible to manage remnant project risks to As Low As Reasonable Possible levels and drive project objectives to desired outcomes.
Coordination and resolution of Heat Transfer Engineering - Unfired issues within the portfolio, including alignment on project design standards and discussions on risk / deviations / derogations and management of Heat Transfer Engineering - Unfired interfaces.
Interface management across all project phases with engineering contractors / design firms, as it pertains to Heat Transfer Engineering - Unfired deliverables (both vendors / EP partners).
Support Materials and Mechanical Integrity (MMI) lead and Engineering Managers in early phases with development of engineering philosophies and strategies that help setup the program for success.
Work with project engineering and other engineering disciplines to Identify, utilize and maximize replication & standardization of unfired heat transfer technology and equipment that could facilitate efficiency throughout the portfolio.
Incorporation of Heat Transfer Engineering - Unfired project learnings from Shell and industry projects.
Support driving the organizational vision, purpose and value by being part of a strong team with EPC partners in clear alignment around desired project objectives and behaviors.
Work collaboratively and oversight of EPC’s development of Heat Transfer Equipment input for Feasibility reports, Basis for Design, Detailed Design, etc.
Driving innovation idea generation for competitive solutions.
Skills and Requirements
What we need from you -
Must have a legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Minimum of 15 years of experience in the development and delivery of Project Heat Transfer Equipment design, engineering, and fabrication within a brownfield and greenfield environment, ideally within refinery or petrochemicals environments.
BS Degree in engineering, preferably Chemical or Mechanical (or equivalent) and experience in all phases of project development and delivery.
Sound background in engineering, as well as recognition as Technical Authority in the field of heat transfer and physics of transport phenomena and fluid flow. Recognize
Understanding of the United States codes and requirements within the Heat Transfer discipline field.
A proven track record of high performance in the Heat Transfer Engineering delivery of a large portfolio of projects or a mega project overseeing EPC design houses.
A mindset and capability to deliver integrated solutions that require apart from the heat transfer skills, a sound understanding of the processes in which the heat transfer equipment is applied and understanding of the business environment.
Track record of effective communication and building effective partnerships with EPCs, suppliers at all levels of the organization.
Experience of management of third-party technology and the successful integration of it within a complex project / facility.
Experience in working with diverse stakeholders to drive and influence cost-benefit outcomes.
Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to work well with people at all levels of the organization internally and externally.
