Job Description:
What’s the role?
The role will focus on supporting the trading of power, natural gas, and environment products for Shell Energy’s Western US trade desk. This support will come through providing data science insights.
As Shell leads in powering the transition to more renewable and zero-carbon energy sources, markets for power, gas and environmental products are becoming more volatile. The primary goal of this role is to establish an effective way of modelling Western US power and gas markets. Modelling these products that are highly dependent on low probability events, weather and regulatory changes requires a keen ability to understand data science and commodities with many different physical attributes. To tackle this problem a blend of mathematical/quantitative approaches are needed. This will likely include the application of Monte Carlo and/or Time Series Stochastic modelling in order to represent the stochastic nature of many market states and events across the power/gas physical system. A key deliverable will be to identify how markets are trading relative to modelled outcomes i.e. are markets trading near model highs or lows; to drive well-reasoned risk/return trades. Understanding the role of renewable power generation in the resource mix and its ongoing development will be essential in the role and ensuring the energy transition.
This role will require in-depth knowledge and experience of mathematics, data science, quantitative analysis, and simulation modelling in order to define/incorporate distributions of many inputs. A commercial mindset is required.
Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a modelling framework that will achieve what was listed in the overview above. This will require expertise in coding and working with large data sets. Specific expertise includes Excel/VBA, database querying/programming/admin, BI reporting services, R, Python, and/or other advanced programming language.
Collaborate with trading team to model market inputs and establish distribution assumptions for those inputs.
Analyze historical pricing relationships to cash and forward prices. These relationships need to be incorporated into the modelling that outputs expected price outcomes.
Work with trade desk to optimize portfolio of assets to maximize value and minimize risk.
Develop, in concert with traders and sales personnel, business and trading strategies
Reconcile Daily Profit and Loss reporting and Exposure reporting tolls while working closely with our Risk management team.
Develop expertise in CAISO operations, trading and scheduling
Collaborate with traders to capture and validate trades and logistical data for daily reporting.
What we need from you
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Minimum of (2) two years of data modelling/analyst experience is required.
Bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Economics, Engineering, Computer Science or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Strong technical abilities across multiple disciplines of computer science, regression/stochastic modelling, and artificial intelligence.
Thorough understanding of Monte Carlo, Time Series Stochastic, Artificial Intelligence ex. machine learning, neural networks.
Knowledge and experience in the WECC region for Power, Environmental Products, and Natural Gas is preferred.
Demonstrate grasp of risk/return as it applies to trading in general.
Deliver solutions that can be understood and translated by the trading team into effective position management strategies.
Ability to break down and relate mathematical concepts in ways the broader group can understand.
Strong analytical and problem-solving aptitude.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with time sensitive deadlines.
Critical thought with strong communication skills (oral and written).
