Position Summary
The Senior Professional, General Chemist is a fast-paced, highly interactive position where you will work across Apparel, Footwear and Accessories, collaborating with the material innovation teams, innovation development and design as well as sourcing and sustainability organizations. In this role, you are one of the main conduits to key chemical partners and responsible for chemical/ material developments across multiple material classifications with a primary focus on bringing performance through sustainability. This role is responsible for supporting the building of a robust innovation portfolio focused on reducing environmental impact through the development of new chemical solutions for UA’s leading products. Your responsibilities will include collaborating with internal partners to scale up innovations and support through the commercialization and working with the Human performance team to identify material needs to create world leading products that the athlete never new they needed but cannot live without. Another aspect to this position will be supporting global supply chain to onboard new chemical partners and help assess all new developments regarding sustainability, ensuring all new materials align with corporate goals.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Leads key polymer developments as SME for foams, plates, synthetic leathers, membranes and coatings with a focus on sustainability and circularity
Conduct / oversee polymer testing and characterization, working with the sustainability team to assess environmental impact
Development of sustainable materials, documenting/ analyzing key data including LCA
Manage key projects within the Material science team and collaborate with the wider Materials team
Develop / lead research programs to enable UA to gain understanding of the state of current polymer science and its relationship to sustainability and performance
Point of contact for select chemical partners
Meet with product engine POD’s (design/development/product line manager) to formulate innovation material pipelines around chemical developments.
Work with development, material operations, quality and production to ensure all new developments are properly allocated and tested.
Travel to global industry events to gain insight into new developments to keep the UA team informed on the latest innovations in the market
Manage data on the current status of developments and help to coordinate projects
Support other teams when interacting with key partners where acting as the POC.
Summarize meetings and communicate action items
Compile information and create presentations
Build and maintain relations with internal and external partners
Takes direction and makes a project their own, assist with other tasks as assigned
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
Robust knowledge in chemistry with a particular focus on either viscoelastic materials or coatings and finishes for materials and processing methods commonly used in apparel and footwear.
Proficient in conducting / overseeing polymer testing and characterization
Strong understanding of the LCA process and able to make recommendations based on findings.
Proficient in relationship management, with experience in managing internal and external relationships
Strong communication skills both verbal and written, with the ability to successfully communicate with vendors from around the world and difference cultural backgrounds.
Proficient project management, process and organization skills. The ability to effectively manage many different tasks and overlapping deadlines.
Understanding of Footwear and / or Apparel supply chain.
The ability to work with internal partners to help shape and define the innovation roadmap

Education And / Or Experience
Master’s degree in material science, chemistry, chemical engineering or related field 3 years related professional experience ideally in footwear or apparel
Project/ portfolio management experience

Location: This role will be located at our Portland, OR office
Return to Work Designation: 3 days in office
T ravel: potentially 5-10% of the year
