What is the role?
Global Renewable Solutions (GRS) is an important and growing division of Renewables and Energy Solutions (RES). GRS is a global team working from regional hubs that is responsible for RES’s growth and profitable position in large scale grid connected renewable power generation; principally solar photovoltaics (PV), battery energy storage, and onshore wind. The GRS team Develops, Builds, Sells and Operates solar and wind assets either through organic growth or via acquisition of development “platforms”.
The EPC Manager reports to the Senior EPC Manager Americas and is a member of the America’s OPI (Onshore Power Infrastructure) team, led by the OPI Head of Development. The role is based in the Brazil with most of the focus initially on Brazil-based solar projects with the potential to expand to wind and battery storage projects in Brazil.
The overarching function of the EPC Manager is to cooperate closely with Business Development and Engineering peers and close support functions such as HSSE, C&P, Legal and ER to deliver safe, profitable renewable power projects on time and on budget whilst maintaining RES’s reputation both internally and externally.
Your goal: making sure multiple high value projects are professionally project managed, from system design through to construction and handover phase such that they are delivered on time, to budget, with no compromise on safety and quality.
The incumbent is expected to establish excellent and constructive working relationships with 3rd party contractors, and to determine how best to balance the distribution of risk and value between GRS and the contractors so that GRS’s global value and growth objectives are expeditiously achieved. The incumbent is expected to have a flexible and open mind to identify new, more efficient ways of structuring GRS’s relationship with its contractors and to have an inquisitive and cooperative mindset to gather and share competitive market intelligence within the Regional Hub and across the network of EPC Managers and back to the Delivery Centre of Excellence.
The EPC Manager will also be expected to identify opportunities to leverage Shell P&T whose current legacy practices may require adjustment to suit the realities of OPI’s business environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Coordinate closely and constructively with the Americas core team of Business Developers to understand project pipeline and deliver country business targets.
Work hand-in-hand with the Sr Project Engineer from project conception to completion.
Create and execute project handover checklist to receive projects from the Project Developer
Locally apply Shell GRS/OPI Global Delivery best practices.
Create contracting strategies for the construction of solar projects including equipment supply, EPC/construction, Owners Engineering
Create project execution plan
Manage project delivery safely, ensuring schedule, cost and quality targets are met.
Oversee the pre-construction, construction, commissioning and handover of projects
Establish, maintain and continuously improve EPC discipline practices and strategy for subsequent projects.
Contribute to EPC Manager network within GRS and Shell portfolio companies.
Establish a strong network with renewables EPCs, equipment suppliers, technical consultants and Owners Engineers.
Apply fit for purpose Shell Opportunity Realization Standard process for GRS.
Represent the GRS team and project with authorities, grid operators and stakeholders
Rapidly develop a working knowledge of in-country electricity network and system operator requirements.
Rapidly develop a working knowledge of permitting, licensing and grid connection requirements in different jurisdictions.
Embed Goal Zero safety mindset in delivery teams and contractors.
Work with the Sr EPC Manager and Global Head of Delivery to develop processes, tools and ways of working that allows the GRS Delivery model to scale at a rate that matches the RES growth ambitions.
What we need from you
Must have legal authorization to work in the Brazil on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Bachelor’s / Master’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent preferred.
Fluency in both Portuguese and English is a must.
Kindly submit your resume in both Portuguese and English.
Minimum of 6 years of practical experience in solar delivery/construction project management gained inside or externally to Shell is a must.
Experience in preparing tenders particularly from the perspective of a construction contractor.
Solid experience in managing contractors, technical consultants, owners’ engineers and independent engineers in the solar industry.
Solid experience in contractor negotiations including dispute resolution.
Solid experience in the management of solar construction projects
Solid experience in the techno-economic optimisation of projects.
Solid understanding of project economics, risk management, value chain and project development.
Experience in managing and influencing other corporate disciplines (e.g. Legal, Procurement, HR)
Knowledge of the solar market in Brazil, including competitive landscape and market rules.
Strong network within renewables industry.
