Job Description:
Shell MDS Malaysia (SMDS) is the world's first commercial Gas-To-Liquids (GTL) glorifying the name of Bintulu, Sarawak.
The Materials & Corrosion Engineer works in the Mechanical and Integrity Department, with expertise in the areas of :
materials selection, welding, failure analysis, corrosion management, corrosion monitoring, RBI, cathodic protection
together with the provision of timely M&C advice on matters of specification, design, selection, procurement, application, maintenance and turnaround.
covers corrosion and materials issues of pressured systems, chemical treatment, supporting new process development and rotating components.
IT system used for the management of the Materials and Corrosion data and activities is the Shell In-house web-based Integrity Management System, w-IMS.
Accountabilities includes:
Manage and update the facility Corrosion Management Framework (CMF), including Project and Modification updated information
Define the material Integrity Operating Windows (IOW)
Monitoring updates of IOW including Chemical monitoring through interaction with the Unit Technologist
Manage the Corrosion Management Expert Groups including all action tracking
Prepare/ review/ update Shell-Risk Based Inspection (S-RBI) database for the whole of SMDS, defining and describing corrosion circuits. Identify potential corrosion mechanisms and their respective locations
Lead Incident Reviews and root cause failure analysis for materials and corrosion related failures
Provide corrosion and metallurgical expertise to Operations and Technologists in failure investigations
Provide design input on material selection and corrosion protection for run and maintain, plant changes and projects, and plant turnaround
Verify adherence to material selection and corrosion standards and procedures (Shell DEP, API and other industrial standards)
Fitness for Service (FFS) practitioner i.e. Shell FFS, API579
Preparing an annual corrosion report for the facility
Carry out deadleg, trunnion and Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) assessments and report corrosion status to Facility as required
Materials selection for facility executed modifications
Provide welding support, or referral to welding expert, for facility fabrication scopes
Provide advice on Cathodic Protection for SMDS metallic pipelines to the Jetty
Provide advice on non-metallic issues for piping in the plant and pipelines to the jetty
Provide M&C input to the Facility(s) MRP
Participate in Ageing Life Extension studies and review work carried out by both internal and external consultants and/or contractors
Interface with discipline Technical Authorities as required
Provide input to safety case revisions, response to external stakeholders and engage with relevant partners, when required
As part of the MCI Team support to fellow Mechanical and Integrity team members, covering other disciplines including Inspection, Welding, Mechanical Static and PEI, may be required on ad-hoc basis.
Provide on the job training and coaching for technicians and students
Educate inspection engineers and technicians in SMDS related materials and corrosion issues
Exhibit firmness in delivering the opinion and inspection recommendation
Expected to be challenged by the direct stakeholders i.e. Maintenance and Operations on the recommendations
Requirements:
• Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering discipline preferably Metallurgy or Materials Engineering
• Minimum 5 years of Oil and Gas / petrochemical plant experience in materials and corrosion
• Preferably minimum 2 years of experience in Gas to Liquid plant
• Preferably certified professionals either Chartered Engineer or NACE Senior Corrosion Technologist or Materials and Corrosion Professionals API571
• Hands on experience in handling material and corrosion issues in oxygen service
• Capable of analyzing inspection data and determining trends in order to prescribe future inspection strategy and recommend the short and long term solutions
• Fluent in both spoken and written English and should have good communication skills
• Skilled in the application of relevant international standards relevant to fitness for purpose standards
• Skilled in conducting Fitness for Service Assessment
• Skilled in handling S-RBI and wIMS software
• Possess analytical mindset, proactive attitude, willing to learn new things, independent, able to work with minimum supervision and pays extra attention to technical details
• Able to work with big data in a short period of time and under environmental pressure
• Actively promote Material & Corrosion, quality management, inspection and certification
• Skilled and talented inter-departmental and inter-discipline team leader
• Have knowledge of specialist techniques /methods and be abreast of new technologies
• Ability to coach the junior inspectors and development engineers
