This is a technical construction inspector position within the Utilities Department. Responsibilities include applying engineering principles and techniques to ensure technical competence and compliance with current construction standards, codes, and criteria. Work also includes reading, interpreting, and reviewing design plans and applications submitted for permits. Employee must exercise initiative and independent judgment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of basic principles and practices involved in civil engineering design and construction.
Considerable knowledge of standard engineering terminology, specifications, and codes.
Knowledge of engineering mathematics as it pertains to standard construction related calculations, measurements, and cost estimates.
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, specifications, sketches, field notes, and other related documents with a high degree of accuracy.
Ability to inspect Utilities projects under construction and to detect deviations from the approved designs, specifications, and construction practices.
Ability to detect and locate defective materials and workmanship during the progress of a project.
Ability to compile comprehensive reports on various phases of construction and review for accuracy, completion, and conformance to established procedures.
Ability to learn the City’s ordinances, rules, and regulations.
Ability to adapt to changing situations demonstrating flexibility and use of logical and practical course of actions to meet City and department goals and objectives.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and exercise good judgment when addressing the public.
Ability to physically perform assigned duties; perform work under adverse field conditions.
Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to lift, carry, pull, push, and maneuver materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
Training, Certification, and Experience
Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or a closely related field.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in construction inspection.
Or, an equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
Valid Florida Driver’s License.
In the event of an emergency or natural/manmade disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by Emergency Management or City Administration. Such assignments may be before, during, and after an emergency or disaster.
