Job Description:

Purpose & Accountabilities

Job Purpose:

The Process Engineer is an experienced process engineer with relevant experience and domain knowledge on several refining technologies.

Process Engineers support a variety of process engineering activities within the Technology organization of an asset supporting the asset’s production units. The activities of Process Engineers are deeply integrated into the site work processes and requires deep collaboration with other disciplines and departments in the site.

There are no direct reports with this role, but the engineer is expected to interact directly with the site production unit and key site production unit supporting staff.

Key accountabilities:

The Process Engineers (Process Technologist/Process Modeling Engineer) will provide process engineering support to the technology organizations to ensure production excellence. They will be expected to support a variety of process engineering activities at the site and identify margin opportunities, cost reductions, process safety assurance and optimize the operating units assigned to them. This can also include remote monitoring and process performance reporting for process units assigned.

Process modelling / simulation is also a scope where the Process Engineer will play a key role in managing and using the unit process modeling tools (i.e. Pro II, SHARC, HYSTAR, COBRA, etc.) to help the technology and production teams translate data to insights to decisions to generate value for the site.

This activity feeds into multiple deliverables.

• Supports continuous improvement of the theme area. The process engineer is assessed based on the delivery of theme area improvement each year which is considered comparable to supervisory team lead leadership. Maintains and improves the portfolio of their respective theme area and delivers value through improvement of the overall theme.

• Supports compliance to global and site standards for technical monitoring process and practices in collaboration with P&T and Global work process focal points.

• Provides inputs and guidance to the OSE’s/CSE’s assigned to the physical assets to ensure their assigned assets are operated in a safe, environmentally sound and reliable manner in accordance with the license to operate and the defined safe operating envelope.

• Maintains up to date technology specific knowledge through LFI, technical networks etc. so as to be able to proactively identify threats to the units or business coming from the wider Shell organization or industry knowledge and practices.

• Identify opportunities to improve unit capacity, yield, availability and utilization in support of the site and business plans.

• Participates in technology forums, conferences to share learning and maintain and improve competencies in their specialty.

• Maintains and help’s develop training materials and guidance manuals designed for Engineers in conjunction with P&T and Learning.

Specific deliverables

Data Rec: The main purpose of these tasks includes running the DataRec model (ROMeo MBM) every day, with troubleshooting/data analysis, make model maintenance updates and perform major model updates as necessary. Currently, the Basic Data Coordinator (BDC) oversees this task and will provide the training to the TAO Process Engineer. The BDC will continue to serve as the local site interface, help with interpreting results, scoping/prioritizing model updates and provide any technical assurance necessary for the deliverables.
Tank turnaround MOCs - Low complexity tank turnaround Management of Change (MOC) are potential candidates for offshore migration to help offload PTSEs and OSEs. The expectation would be for the TAO Process Engineer to participate crude tank cleaning MOCs to ensure robust process safety management for changes to be implemented. Specific tasks by TAO Process Engineer would include hydraulic calculations, gathering the information, red marked P&ID review, perform other related process engineering tasks, and participation in safety hazard analysis. The TAO process engineer is also expected to complete PEC (person executing a change) training and adhere to all Shell standards and DEPs even though it is not expected for TAO Process Engineer to lead the change as a PEC. Only site staff shall perform the PEC role. The onsite PTSE Logistics will support with conducting the PSSR. The TA-3 for Process Engineering (OSE Logistics or Process Engineering Supervisor) would still retain the technical assurance responsibilities
Process Modeling: TAO process engineers are expected to run process unit flowsheets and process models for simulation and optimization activities. The regular running of the model and including the output from these models in monitoring sheets can help with Unit Monitoring or Long-Term Proactive Monitoring (LTPM) activities. Furthermore, these monitoring sheets can also help with Heat and Mass Balance (HMB), Custody Transfer Meters (CTM), and DataRec (MBM) model inputs. The TAO process engineer can also help the OSEs at different process units to conduct analysis and troubleshooting. TAO process engineers can develop other monitoring tools.
Heat and Mass Balance - Heat and material balance (HMB) sheets are tracked and compiled on a monthly basis and used for troubleshooting. TAO process engineers are expected to accurately and consistently update these sheets for revalidation. This activity would necessitate working with Operations Support Engineering (OSE) and Basic Data Coordinator (BDC) to reconcile mass balance and stream property gaps and helps reconcile gas between non-linear process models and plant measurements
PI Updates: PI tag and calculation need various updates including cleaning of LTPM reporting templates. This may be a one-time activity to clean up LTPM documents. There may other PI-related activities that could be added to the worklist funnel as expertise is developed in this area
RADAR and FIM actions: Currently, there is a safeguarding study to be performed for the Coker drum RV safeguarding study which is a FIM action. Safeguarding studies are necessary to ensure proper protection against equipment overpressure and failure scenarios. Additional safeguarding studies or other RADAR and FIM action items may be added to the task list depending on the nature of the request compared against the experience and comfort level of the TAO team member

Specific activities can include (but not limited to):

Monitoring of units using existing tools like PI-Book, SmartM, PTM-Hub, UTL, Sample Manager
Gathering required information out of AIM, SIFPro, Technology SharePoint sites etc.
Continuous improvement of PTM-monitoring plans including gap-closure, maintenance of tags, adjustment of limits etc.
Developing of proposals to address identified immediate threats
Detailed root-cause analysis of abnormalities
Developing of proposals to optimize units
Preparation, execution and reporting of testruns in direct cooperation with PU
Discuss these reports with PU and Technology representatives

Dimensions

No Annual budgets which you directly control but can have influence over department and production area budgets.
No direct staff for which you are administratively accountable for. You are responsible to mentor, coach, and support.

Challenges

• Being able to effectively provide technical PTM support virtually
