The Energy Category Manager will be part of the Category Team, a global team responsible for contract management and procurement of Energy, Industrial Gases, Catalyst, Chemicals & Metals, for all Shell classes of business. This Team delivers sustained value across the Enterprise, through End-to-End Category Management, in a collaborative approach with stakeholders and suppliers alike, whilst ensuring a reliable and safe Supply.

What’s the role?

As an Energy Category Manager, you will focus on maximizing value across the Shell Group and Shell Operated Ventures, with the aim to negotiate & actively manage Top Quartile contracts with Strategic suppliers and to provide strong Commercial support to our frontlines at the assets. You will play a key part in driving commercial initiatives and development of the Energy category strategy at a local and regional level, and the delivery of most competitive Energy supply agreements which primarily serve the Chemicals and Products assets in the East.

You will also provide strong contributions to Shell’s Energy Transition projects for the various CoB assets in both the East and Europe and will be responsible for utilizing their category knowledge to contribute towards Shell Group’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reductions and Net Zero ambition.

Major responsibilities and accountabilities:


Be viewed as an expert who can develop and implement a “most competitive supply chain”, putting in place category strategies and commercially competitive deals, based on an exhaustive review across all available Total Cost of Ownership (TCoO) value levers.

Leverage depth of category knowledge and market dynamics to create negotiating strategies and opportunity roadmaps which will contribute to the site’s competitive advantage.

Consistently develop and integrate short and long-term category opportunities into agreed site priorities, by using view of future spend and knowledge of the end-to-end supply chain, in conjunction with their market expertise, commercial acumen and deep understanding of the regulatory environment.

Be a leader in developing effective commercial contracts which incentivize the right supplier behavior and drive improved commercial outcomes.

Brings external focus and can articulate choices to the business and show how the deal is the best available in the marketplace.

Lead cross-functional negotiation teams and coordinate the input of financial, economic, technical, commercial & legal issues into negotiation deals.

Translates complex commercial deals into actionable commercial improvement opportunities.

Able to out-think the commercial aggressiveness of our suppliers and contractors and be recognized as a shrewd negotiator for both their own deals and for coaching others.

Assist the Contract Owners and Contract Holders in managing the supply agreements to deliver on the Key Performance Indicators and increased supplier performance, with a specific focus on improved service, value delivery, product quality, HSSE and sustainable development performance.

Develop category strategies and action plans for the Business to maximize the value of spend in the category area on a life cycle basis. Implement and manage this strategy with tools including but not limited to:



Category Management and Contracting Process (CMCP)
Contracts Management System (ARIBA)
Financial Reporting of Cost Improvements (FIT4)
Standard templates (RFP, Evaluation & Contract)
Supply Chain Cost Models


What we need from you

We are keen to hear from individuals who have substantial experience in global category management, commercial deal- making and/ or commercial aspects of technical.

We also hope you posses the following skills and experience:


University degree or equivalent.

An expertise and thorough understanding of the energy markets is preferred.

Continuous drive to deliver added value and recognized as a doer.

Experience of “Delivering Through Others”.

Commercial acumen and track record of delivering value to the Group.

Key strategic thinker, who has ability to constructively challenge current approach & strategy and drive implementation of lessons learnt.

Experience of working and leading of teams / projects, or business activities, with a diverse range of skills and various business backgrounds.

Strong stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills to seek understanding and to influence towards own goals.

Professional CP qualification & experience is preferred.

Fluency in the English language (spoken and written). Fluency in additional languages is a plus.
