This an exciting opportunity for someone with strong IT technical knowledge to blaze a trail as we move to a new “IT Operations of the Future” organization. The Senior Reliability Engineer will also have several opportunities to power Shell’s green engine.
What’s the role?
The IT Ops Senior Reliability Engineer is a member of the Shell IT Services & Operations Management (SOM) function who works in a natural team with mobile application developers, infrastructure operators and other IT staff on a range of agile (BizDevSecOps) activities. The key deliverable is driving the product team to maximize the long-term reliability of the Products in their remit by focusing on automation and maintenance in the live environment, scoping and supporting technical-debt backlog items in Sprints, checking the impact and quality of code releases and deployments, building in supportability from the outset.
The BizDevSecOps approach to mobile application and software development aims for frequent, incremental changes to code versions, which means frequent deployment and testing regimens. Although Product Reliability Engineer will rarely code from scratch, they must understand the basics of software development languages and be familiar with the development tools used to create new code or update existing code. In the case of technical-debt backlog items they may be called upon to develop code.
The IT Ops Senior Reliability Engineer may be asked to develop or source application and system management tools that mitigate manual effort; implement automated management features, such as performance monitoring, diagnostics and failover and availability capabilities. This role should have the ability to look at and understand how an entire system (product line) works as well as their own specific Products. The ability to step back and conceptually understand how all the pieces fit together is key to being a reliability engineer.
Accountabilities include:
Product Reliability & Operations
Own product operations and be accountable for managing the operational backlog items and technical-debt items of production platforms as well as being part of service management & integration teams within wider connected portfolio,
Collaborates and works with IDT, Vendors and Suppliers for the delivery of secure and reliable products within an integrated IDT landscape.
Focus on relentless prioritization to maintain delivery on value, whilst ensuring secure, reliable and efficient operations for the product which are aligned with product roadmap objectives
Technology Reliability & Operations
E2E responsible for the IT Products run and maintain operational processes in line with service requirements
Utilize technical knowledge to quickly resolve operational incidents and identify, if needed, emergency changes Gatekeeper of changes and releases through agreed governance structure. Review upcoming changes outside of the product, identify those impacting the operational landscape, prioritize based on total cost of ownership (TCO), present prioritized recommendations to Product team
Validate change/release impact is properly risk assessed and managed
Engage with Security team to resolve Data Privacy, Fraud, and other security related incidents
Participates in defining the testing requirements and as part of product delivery ensures successful testing is completed in-line with product owner expectations per governance structure.
As part of the BizDevSecOps model, is active in delivering Bug Fixes & Minor Enhancements either directly or through partners/vendors
Liaises with vendors and Shell internal teams to ensure issue resolution of product/connected landscape issues
Manage and coordinate with service providers and third parties to solve e2e solution issues
Monitor and initiate work with other specialists and supplier(s) to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
Monitor daily and weekly performance metrics to identify process and systemic issues requiring further attention, including potential process, people, or tool changes and incorporate requirements in product backlog
Analyze results of vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, wireless checks, etc. and incorporate requirements in product backlog to resolve findings
Assist with evidence collection of regulatory and compliance controls
Assist with Transition to Support activities and acts as Product SME for support operations
Manages supplier relationships (for operations topics) related to the Products.
Ensure IRM risks, BIA and controls in place for the Product are operating effectively; assist with audit readiness
What we need from you?
Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Bachelor’s degree is highly preferred
Must have a Minimum of eight (8) years in applications support and IT services and operations management.
Strong stakeholder management skills, and development, operations, and security experience
Sound knowledge of Downstream and Retail business work processes, business requirements and their impact on operations and customers
Proven Continuous Improvement skills
Strong technical background
ITIL certification preferred
Excellent communicator at all levels
Strong process management skills
Proven record of delivering against stretch targets
Proven ability to influence without line management control
Team player, works effectively with all levels in organisation (business, external suppliers, suppliers within IT)
Proven coordination and consulting management skills
Work effectively in virtual, geographic dispersed, cross-cultural environments
Strong leadership and incident, change and problem management capabilities to transform activities from the current operating model to the end-to-end process model
Ability to represent Shell with external service providers
Ability to deal with conflict and ambiguity effectively
Ability to maintain a decision/position without damaging working relationships
