What’s the role?
The Process Control Engineer provides hands-on process control support to our production units, ensuring our plant operations are safe, reliable, and within prescribed environmental and regulatory limits. This role works closely with Production and Maintenance Teams on short term activities like process troubleshooting, controller tuning and small plant changes; to ensure production plan delivery is achieved. In addition, this team member drives long term continuous improvement, through Project Development, Plant Optimization initiatives, and Turnaround scope development and Execution.

We are looking two new members for our Scotford Automation team. One is a senior role, focused on long-term reliability and optimization. The second is more intermediate, focused on day-to-day support, troubleshooting and Management of Change activities. Ideally you will bring a learner mindset because we want you to develop and expand your skills. We want you to bring your unique perspective, views, and ideas to support the transformation of our business. We also are looking for someone who will conduct themselves in a manner that is inclusive and supportive of Shell’s Respectful Workplace Policy.
Shell Scotford currently operates under a Hybrid work model, where flexibility to work from home is available. Please note, however, that this is a hands-on role so significant site time (3-4 days/week) is expected and required.
The following are the primary accountabilities for the Process Control Engineer:
Lead engineering activities for the assigned Production Asset, covering both short-term and long-term aspects of base layer control strategies, Human-Machine Interface (HMI) design, and alarm management
Identify unit performance improvement opportunities and reliability risks, and work with Asset team to determine and implement cost effective solutions
Understand the process safety requirements for the production Area and collaborate with SIS focals in designing new or modifying existing Safety Instrumented Functions
Author plant changes (MOC) within the Process Control discipline and provide Technical Assurance of plant changes by other disciplines and departments
Conduct or lead failure analysis and causal investigation of Base Layer control failures or incidents. Develop solutions to prevent future occurrence
Contribute to capital projects through development, assurance, and commissioning activities
Collaborate with Systems and Instrumentation specialists in developing and implementing obsolescence strategies for equipment in the assigned production areas
Collaborate with Instrument and Maintenance specialists in developing and owning the Turnaround worklist for assigned production areas, and provide active support for the implementation of process control scope during turnarounds
Skills & Requirements
What do we need from You?
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone, not just your current employer
You have completed a post-secondary degree in Engineering, or an equivalent Engineering Technology diploma. Post-Graduate degrees are welcome but not required! You already have, or are eligible for, a professional designation from APEGA
You have engineered, assured, implemented, and downloaded process control designs in a live operating plant. Your work has included Control strategies, Human Machine Interface design (process graphics), and alarm configuration
You consider yourself skilled in providing hands-on process control engineering on at least one of the major Distributed Control Systems (Experion, Fox I/A, DeltaV, Yokogawa, ABB)
You have demonstrated a working understanding of Instrumentation technology selection and design.
Your experience has given you a working knowledge of engineering practices and processes in an industrial environment, such as Management of Change (MOC)
You are willing to provide some off-hours support during plant upsets, emergencies, and Turnarounds. These events are not typically a regular occurrence however they do require additional support when they happen
If you also have some hands-on experience with Safety Interlock Systems (SIS) or other automation systems, such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs) we really want to talk with you!
