Pasadena, CA — General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC will each be hiring around 1,000 engineers and technicians for their Detroit area factories.

GM plans to add around a 1,000 engineers and researchers who will be working on projects related to electric vehicles like its newly launched Chevrolet Volt. GM will start hiring immediately and the hiring will continue for the next two years. For GM, this is the first major hiring since it has emerged from bankruptcy that it filed in June 2009. GM today has around 209,000 employees worldwide.

Chrysler has stated that it is recruiting on 35 college campuses for around a 1,000 positions in its headquarters and technical center at Auburn Hills. Chrysler has plans to hire during the next four months in anticipation of its global growth and the expansion of its small and midsize models lineup. Chrysler has hired around 5,000 people since emerging from bankruptcy in June 2009 and has a total of 49,000 employees.

CEO A. Harrison Barnes of EngineeringCrossing sees this as an example of the upswing in engineering jobs. ''GM and Chrysler hiring engineers is a sign of the auto industry coming around and starting to become a generator of high paying jobs once again. The auto parts industry is also going to hire more people if the carmakers keep ramping up production.'' Barnes' firm has been able to compile a list of over 72,000 engineering jobs available throughout the country this month.
