Job Description:

APPOINTMENT: August 2021

RESPONSIBILITIES: Operate and maintain engineering laboratories with emphasis on operating and supervising the machining lab and maker space in support of the mission of the WIU School of Engineering. On an as-needed basis support of research and development in advanced materials and manufacturing techniques for defense and civilian purposes at the Quad City Manufacturing Lab. Supervise student interns and train them in equipment operation and maintenance.

Operating, installing, maintaining, monitoring machinery, tooling, supplies, and other equipment in the School of Engineering laboratories.

Supervise installing, maintaining, monitoring machinery, tooling, supplies, and other equipment in the School of Engineering Materials, Fluids, Electronics, and Maker Space Laboratories.

Serve as the laboratory safety administrator/supervisor.

Supervision and training of users on the proper, safe, and efficient use of all laboratories in the School of Engineering.

Other duties as assigned by the Director of School of Engineering.

Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Technology Education, Technology, or equivalent level of work experience. The individual must have experience in machining, use of or ability to learn how to use CAD/CAM software, supervision and/or operation of a full service machining operation. Experience in safety training and technology instruction relevant to operating a machining laboratory. Ability to function as the lab safety administrator/supervisor.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience teaching CAD, lab safety, or other technology subjects.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body). Unless otherwise stated, the degree must be in hand at the time of application.

Additional Information:

THE DEPARTMENT: The School of Engineering, located at the WIU Quad Cities campus provides instruction in Mechanical Engineering, and a General Engineering program with emphasis in five areas including Civil and Electrical Engineering. The laboratories consist of a machine shop with CNC and manual machines, test equipment and a variety of other equipment. Other labs include a mechatronics, materials, fluid dynamics, and maker space labs in support of instruction. On the US Army Arsenal in Rock Island, the School maintains a research lab (Quad Cities).

THE UNIVERSITY: Since 1902, Western Illinois University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to individuals in west central Illinois and well beyond our region and state. WIU's traditional residential campus in Macomb, Illinois, is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region, while the WIU-Quad Cities non-residential branch campus in Moline, Illinois, is the only public university in the immediate Quad Cities region.

WIU-Quad Cities: The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000).

WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. These cultural and resource centers promote WIU's goal of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through educational programming and advocacy.

The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
